About My Work

The nuts and bolts of how I draw my cartoons is pretty basic. I start off by being nuts, so I get these ideas (voices really) in my head. I bolt to my notebook and write them down, or sketch them out. I like to work with a 9mm mechanical pencil for the sketches. For the pens I like the Sakura Pigma Brush pen. I used to use nibs and India ink, but I found I hated to clean them up, and the nibs would sometimes clog. The brush pen gives a nice line and there is no clean up. I also use the Sakura Micron 08, and 05 for finer details. Once scanned I use PhotoShop.
Below
is the anatomy of a cartoon. This
is a simplified tour of the steps I go through when I make a cartoon.
The first box is out of my sketchbook.
I like to write down, or make a real quick sketch of an idea.
On this particular one I cannot recall what led me to this concept.
The middle is a clearer drawing. From
there I make a final drawing in ink. I
scan that and make any corrections, add color and put it on the web.
